It’s that time of year again: where Christmas lights string over nearly everything in sight which seem to stretch out for miles; where, wherever you go, soft Christmas music is playing in the background; where the snow crunches under your feet… and where Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady, NY hosts Melodies of Christmas! What is Melodies of Christmas? In 1979, Jim Delmonico, the then-station manager of Channel 6, learned that his granddaughter had been diagnosed with cancer. Melodies of Christmas took off that year, with Delmonico leading the way as the show’s lead sponsor. It has been nearly 35 years, and the spirit of the cause and the holidays has not slowed down since. Every year, the Capital Region’s very own Empire State Youth Orchestra and Chorale along with the Northeast Ballet partner with Freihofer’s Bakery, Price Chopper, and CBS6 News to help support the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer & Blood Disorders at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med. All funds from the show go directly to support this wonderful cause. According to www.amc.edu, over $7 million dollars have been raised by Melodies of Christmas for the Melodies Center in the past 34 seasons! Not only is this show a great way to help support a great cause, it’s a festive and musical way to celebrate the holiday season with friends and family. This year, Melodies of Christmas will be held on December 18-21 (Thursday-Sunday). All are welcome to attend, not only to feel the excitement first-hand, but also to help support a special cause.
